Purak Poshan Yojana, also known as Supplementary Nutrition Scheme (SN), is one of the services provided under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme which is primarily designed to bridge the gap between the recommended dietary allowance (FDA) and the Average Daily Intake (ADI). Supplementary nutrition is given to the children (6 months-6 years) and pregnant and lactating mothers under the ISDS scheme. The Government of India on 24.2.2009, has issued a revised guideline on nutritional and feeding norms. State and UTs have been requested to provide supplementary nutrition to children below six years of age and pregnant and lactating mothers. There are two types of Supplementary feeding (Purak Poshan) applied in the state by the social welfare department.
- Supplementary Nutrition for ICDS projects in rural areas through Aanganwadi (it is a type of mother and child care center in India) Centres.
- Supplementary Nutrition in Urban Slum Areas through NGO’s.
For nutritional purposes, ICDS provides 500 Kilo Calories (with 12-15 grams of protein) every day to every child below 6 years of age and for adolescent girls, it is up to 500 kilocalories with 25 grams of protein a day.
The services of immunization, health check-ups and referral services delivered through Public Health Infrastructure under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. UNICEF has provided essential supplies for the ICDS scheme since 1975. World Bank has also assisted with financial and technical support for the programme. This scheme is centrally sponsored but the supplementary nutrition must be provided by the state government.
