Years ago, before this scheme came into act; on 1st April 2001 “Annapurna Yojana” was launched. In which the old age people who don’t get the pension are eligible for free 10 kg of supplement (6kh wheat + 4 kg Rice) per month. After successful implementation if this schemes, different governments introduced different schemes such as Annapurna Rasoi Bhandar or Annapurna Bhandar by Rajasthan State government. Shramik Annapurna Yojana by Government of Gujarat launched recently.
The Indian Ministry of Agricultural Cost and Prices has referred to the bill as the “biggest ever experiment in the world for distributing highly subsidized food by any government through Rights Based Approach.” The bill extended to cover the 820 million people of the country. Approximate cost of running this scheme reached 1.2 trillion rupees in 2014. Whereas this scheme also received a lot of criticism because of so many loopholes in actually implementing the scheme, but overall it received a louder appreciation from the people of the country. Therefore, Food Security card is given to the beneficiaries who apply for it in a regulated process. They will be able to get the food, from government established shops in every state. This is how it will continue to work best.
